PeaZip can be used as a graphical shell for console archivers: PAQ / LPAQ, QUAD / BALZ .

ZipStar is free analog of Squeez for non-commercial use. ZipStar is used the same library to compress files (SQX-compressor) as Squeez

Normal and high compression of WinRK is tested.

All new versions of archivers on 2009-05-07. Testing was conducted May 2009.

Are not taken beta, unless archivers were smaller version 1.x Compassion files took place in two modes - normal and maximum backup with default settings, that is ticking and no additional installation is selected. Time does not back up files for more than an hour. Archivers, working from the command line testing WILL NOT BE! Users should be simple and clear: paste  the file, chose the level back up and forward. All other settings for amateur . The easier it is - the better. WinRar - selected as a standard. When the degree of compassionis worse than that of WinRar archivers consider meaningless. The degree of CPU usage - average. record how much memory uses archiver did not, as a number of archivers amount of memory is increasing in the archive. If the CPU usage 50% - this means that the archiver uses only one processor.

LPAQ8 run through a shell PeaZip

I test PIM  for the maximum (default option) compression  and PIM  has very good results for compression of bmp-images. The amount of compression other  algorithms is worse than WinRar.

Plans (one set of test per week):

Test files of presentation (ppt) Microsoft Power Point (updated)

Test  another set of numerical data (various sizes)

Test  another set of numerical data with different distribution of the volume of files (a normal distribution and constant). Synthetic test.

Repetition of tests with files of doc, xls, ppt, stored in a Microsoft Office 2007

Pictures ( tiff)  (updated)

PIM - has a value of compression and it would have very good results for compression of bmp-images.

Conclusions:

1. Booting processor for Winrar, 7-zip and Freearc lies within the range of 60-90% and sometimes with the shortest CPU accounting even lower values than at normal compression. for PIM, Bee, Squeez, Nanozip and WinRK CPU is 50% - using a single kernel processor

2. The value of maximum compression is achieved at Nanozip. But we must wait.

3. Winrar loses  7-zip and Freearc how to maximize the amount of compression, and the largest compression for the same time

4. 7-zip and Freearc show approximately the same results

5. Commercial Squeez and WinRK lose free program Nanozip, 7-zip and Freearc. Is that WinRK maximum compression is better than 7-zip and Freearc. There are  long compression time!

6. WinRar gives 25-30% compression of files and Nanozip, 7-zip and Freearc gives 15-20% compression, while working longer. But being slightly larger.

7. WinRar - standard, as well as zip archive. Fast and good compression. Become better and better, but the degree of compression does not change since the inception.

8. 7-zip - is gradually becoming more and more popular. File Compression - excellent. Rate is lower than WinRar

9. FreeArc - trying to create a competition to 7-zip. For all of the parameters close to the 7-zip. The question is whether he can become popular as a 7-zip.

10. Nanozip - a winner on all tests, but the compression rate of files leaves much to be desired

11. PIM - slow, and like he compresses images

12. Bee - the low rate compression.

13. Squeeze-and slow-largest compressed file loses 7-zip and FreeArc

14. WinRk - with excellent file size compression, but still loses Nanozip on the rate and amount of compression

15. PeaZip - using his graphic shell you can run different console archivers

16. LPAQ8 - run through PeaZip. A very good compression of files for numeric and text files. Slow. Faster than NanoZip

17. Dark has the same compression and compression  rate as WinRar
